History of English – OE Syntax
Old English had a great freedom of word order however old English never had syntactic freedom of Latin.
There are two ways of establishing word order of Old English.

    1.Basic word order 2.Head-Modifier Patterns
In first way there are 6 theoretically possible orders: SVO,SOV,VSO,OSV,OVS,VOS.
The following first 3 orders used more in old English.
    For example Word order
    Subject verb object
SVO: That place is called Heaven field in English.
SOV: Those who his will in the world do.
The word order VSO basically use in interrogative form: Have you hawks?
    Second way
Freedom of word order was equivalent to the flexibility in simple Head-Modifier constructions. I will take two of them. First concerns ADPOSITIONS . In this case we can find PREPOSITION and POSTPOSITION.
    1. On his own land (preposition: on)
    2. And said then finally regally him to (postposition: to)

    Sentences in OLD ENGLISH
Sentences in OE consist several clauses. The structure in OE was simply then we would find today. System of relative pronounce was poorly developed. Syntactic aspects of OE including they use subjunctive and we use double negation. Case Syncretism is a technical term. OE nouns had 4 cases.

  2. East Germanic.
The east Germanic subgroup was formed by the tribes who retuned from Scandinavia at the beginning of our era. The most numerous and powerful of them were the Goths. they start their great migration to leave the coast of the Baltic sea. Around 200 A.D. they moved south-east later reached the lower basin of the Danube, where they made attacks on the Eastern Roman Empire, Byzantium. The eastern Goths OstrogotÓ˜ consolidated into a powerful tribal alliance in the lower basin of the Dniester, traversed the Balkans and their set up a kingdom in northern Italy with Ravenna as its capital. In the 5th -6th c. under the culture of the Ostrogothic short-lived flourishing. The Gothic language now dead, the 4th-6th c. written records has been preserved. The Goths were the first of the teutons to become Christian. In the 4th c. Ulfilas, a west Gothic bishop, made a translation of the Gospels from Greek into Gothic. In the 5th-6th c. were written form, on red parchment with silver and golden letters and is known as the “SILVER CODEX”. In the 17th c. Ulfilas Gospels were first published, and studied by 19th and 20th c. philologists. The silver codex is one of the earliest texts in the languages of the Germanic group. The other east Germanic languages, all of which are now dead. Some of their tribal names have survived in place names, which reveal the directions of their migrations.

  3. Modern Germanic Languages
Languages can be classified according to different principles. Has historical, genealogical classification. Genetically English belongs to the Germanic or Teutonic group of languages. The Germanic languages in the modern world are as follows: English, German, Netherlandish, Afrikaans,Danish, Swedish and e.g. It is difficult to estimate the number of people speaking Germanic languages. The total number of people speaking Germanic languages approaches 440 million.
The earliest period of Germanic history. Proto-Germanic.
The history of the Germanic group begins with the appearance of what is known as the Proto-Germanic Language. PG is the linguistic ancestor or the parent-language. The Germanic tribes belonged to the western division of the Indo-European tongues. Proto-Germanic is an entirely pre-historical language, it was never recorded in written form. It was reconstructed by methods of comparative linguistics. The first mention of Germanic tribes was made by Pitheas. And also Julius Caesar described some militant Germanic tribes.
